The Betty Ford Center's Professional in Residence (PIR) Programs are
experiential training programs designed to expand the awareness and
understanding of chemical dependency and its treatment among helping
professionals. Professionals from a variety of fields attend these
programs, including health care professionals, psychologists,
therapists, social workers, educators, counselors, employee assistance
professionals, law enforcement personnel, attorneys, clergy, coaches,
athletic directors and business leaders.
The Professionals in Residence (PIR) programs offer the participant a
chance to experience the process of treatment, attend special
lectures, observe the Interdisciplinary team approach, and learn to
identify and refer potential addicts for treatment. It is an intensive
one week program of immersion into the world of the addict and their
family members.
5 day inpatient program:
Professionals in this program participate in the primary residential
treatment units and receive a deeper understanding of the treatment
process and planning through extended involvement with patients and
staff. Professionals participate with patients in lectures, group
therapy, meals, activities, and spend time with the staff in case
planning and review. There are also follow up lectures covering a
myriad of topics related to addiction presented by the different
departments on campus.
Learning objectives include:
* Provide an opportunity for the professional to learn from the
addict themselves about their journey into the world of addiction; the
effects of their addictive behaviors on the mental, emotional, social,
and spiritual aspects of their lives.
* Provide the professional with an up close and personal glimpse
of how the staff work with addicts and how the process of recovery
begins.
5 day family program:
Professionals participate with the family members in lectures, group
therapy, meals, activities, and spend time with the staff in case
planning and review.
The main objective of this program is to provide professionals with
an understanding of what impact the alcoholic or addict's behavior
has on non-using family members and friends. As well as offer an
understanding of how the recovery process works for the whole
family.
5 Day Residential Day Treatment Program (RDT):
This program is dedicated to those addicts who require longer term
care and monitoring and is especially useful for licensed
professionals struggling with addiction. This level of care provides
the addict with an opportunity to practice recovery skills in a
community environment. For the professional, daily involvement with
the patient is supplemented with lectures by staff from a variety of
departments.
